The Behind the Veil Collection was created through the “Behind the Veil Oral History Project” during the summers of 1993-1995 by Duke University’s Center for Documentary Studies. <\/p>\n
This project was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and according to the project’s website, its primary purpose “was to record and preserve the living memory of African American life in the American South during the age of legal segregation and its immediate aftermath, from the 1890s to the 1970s.” <\/p>\n
Local members of the community were interviewed and recorded at the library during the project by graduate students, from universities all over the country, who served as summer research assistants during the summers of 1993, 1994, and 1995. <\/p>\n
Copies of these cassette tapes are housed at the Main Branch and are available for use inside the library.
